California Legalizes Gay Marriage

Until last week, California's gay couples could have all the benefits and responsibilities of marriage. However, their relationships could not be called “marriages”, under a law passed by referendum in 2000. On Thursday May 15th the Californian Supreme Court changed that by ruling, by four to three, that it was unconstitutional to consign gay couples to a terminological second class, when duly passed laws agreed that they had the same concrete rights. Despite changing little on the ground, the symbolic importance is large.

Khaled Hadj Brahim (born 29 February 1960), better known as Khaled, is a raï singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born in Algeria. He began recording in his early teens under the name Cheb Khaled (Arabic for "Young Khaled") and has become probably the most internationally famous Algerian singer. His popularity has earned him the unofficial title "King of Raï".
